Pitching carries Spinners again

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Tzu-Wei Lin singled in a run in the third inning and Mario Alcantara dazzled in his second start of the season as the Lowell Spinners won their fourth game of the season, 1-0, over the Vermont Lake Monsters last night in a rain-shortened six inning affair.

Lowell (4-3) plated the only run of the game in the third inning by playing a little small ball.

Alcantara (2-0, 0.00) has begun the season white-hot, as he tossed five scoreless innings of two-hit ball. He walked two and struck out four. Through two starts this season, Alcantara hasn’t allowed a run in 10 innings.

Van Kirk powers Fisher Cats

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Deck McGuire pitched six strong innings and Brian Van Kirk belted a home run and a triple to help the Fisher Cats (36-40) defeat the Reading Fightin Phils (32-43) by a final of 6-3 last night.

New Hampshire opened the scoring on a Ryan Schimpf home run in the second. The blast was Schimpf’s league-leading 14th of the season to give McGuire the early advantage at 1-0.

Van Kirk struck for the first time in the fourth, belting a lead-off homer down the right field line to push the lead to 4-2. After Reading grabbed a run back in the fifth, Van Kirk’s triple in the sixth inning sparked a two-run frame to pad the lead back to three runs at 6-3.
