Volleyball Coach of the Year: Tony Hajjar, Lawrence

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — Tony Hajjar hit even the hottest, hippest media when his Lawrence team beat St. John’s for the North Sectional title.

“Tony Hajjar: Consistently dominant, consistently playing passionate volleyball ... special.” ... Tweeted St. Anselm’s coach Dan Young.

Talk about summing a program up in last than 160 characters. Young’s call on Hajjar’s juggernaut was right on the money.

The sparkling 23-2 mark this year for the state semifinalists gives, Hajjar, who works security at the high school, a 259-94 record in 16 years.

“The guy puts everything he has into those kids, and if you do that with those kids, it tends to be rewarded,” said Young, who worked with Hajjar for years with the Latitude club program. “There’s a work ethic, a lineage of kids coming back. It carries over to the younger kids.

“Those kids, guys who’ve played at a higher level, are coming back out of loyalty, love, whatever you want to call it.”

“Tony is a consummate manager. He runs everything. He’s so strong in coaching skills and gets help from the people around him that support him. He’s not afraid to ask himself, but he knows the game so well.”

Hajjar’s son, T.J., is the head coach at Merrimack College.
