Coughlin finishes second at nationals

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — FARGO, N.D. — North Andover’s Danielle Coughlin couldn’t quite win a national championship Tuesday night, but she easily became an All-American.

After six straight victories in the Junior Women’s Wrestling Freestyle Nationals, Coughlin lost in the finals to Michigan’s Steffanie Hampton to finish second in the 117-pound class.

Coughlin wrestled at 106 pounds during the season when she had a 30-6 record and became the first girl in Massachusetts history to win a state title in boys wrestling.

Prior to the finals, Coughlin destroyed her competition. Her closest match was an 11-4 decision. Otherwise, she had two pins and three technical falls in which she didn’t give up a point.

Coughlin, who is headed to Endicott College in the fall, was one match away from being an All-American (top eight) at Fargo last year and was determined to reach that goal this year. It turns out that she made it and then some.

At this point, she does not plan on continuing her wrestling career. If so, she went out with a bang.
