Surging Warriors pull off dramatic sweep

HAVERHILL — Down by a run in the bottom of the ninth of game two, the Merrimack baseball team rallied for two runs, capped off by a walk-off base hit from senior Alan Pastyrnak Jr. as the Warriors pulled off a dramatic doubleheader sweep against Saint Michael’s, 8-4 and 3-2, yesterday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Divisional action at Trinity Stadium.

Taking all three games against Saint Mike’s over a two-day span, the Warriors improve to 15-6 overall while moving their conference record to 6-1 and their divisional record to 3-0.

Merrimack will open its home slate Tuesday, continuing divisional play with a league tilt against Bentley at 3:30 p.m. before welcoming Pace and Adelphi next weekend.

“It was a great effort, being resilient in game two and coming back the way that we did,” head coach Jim Martin noted afterward.

In the first game, Merrimack pounded out 12 hits and tacked on key runs in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively, to pull away late in the game.

Sophomore Joe Carnevale was stellar en route to locking down his third win of the year. The righty tossed six innings and fanned five while scattering seven hits and allowing two runs. Seniors Brett Julian and Brian Wolfendale of Methuen tossed the final three innings to preserve the lead and the win for their starter.

Merrimack had two insurance runs in the eighth, highlighted by a mammoth solo shot off the bat of Lawrence’s Dionys Quezada.

Jenn Pino of North Andover had a goal and an assist for the Warriors (1-6, 0-4), who return home Wednesday against Saint

Men’s lax romps

The No. 5 Merrimack men’s lacrosse team stayed hot yesterday as it defeated Saint Rose on the road by the score of 19-2 for its fourth straight victory. Greg Melaugh led the Warriors offense with five goals on the afternoon.

Merrimack (4-1, 3-0 NE-10) will stay on the road for a conference game against Franklin Pierce Wednesday.
