Prep School Softball: Ex-Brooks captain is new coach

---- — Outlook: Phillips has been the beast of prep softball over the last two years and, with Kayla Maloney still pitching and hitting, that shouldn’t change much this year. Brooks, under new coach Monica Berube, has more experience than in recent years and should be vastly improved.

Fast facts: Brooks is hoping to snap a streak of three straight losing seasons after enjoying 10 straight winning seasons ... Monica Berube, a Brooks co-captain in 2008, takes over as head coach for Andrea Heinze, who had a 184-80 record in 18 years. Heinze will be the varsity assistant. Berube, who was an assistant last year, played for Bates and now works in the school’s alumni office. ... Cassandra Hunt transferred from Andover High and will split pitching duties with Sam Nestor. Hunt is repeating her sophomore year. ... Amelia Hulshult moves from third base to catcher. Last year’s catcher, Jackie DiTroia, is starting at WPI. ... There are only 11 players on the varsity and, until this week, 17 players in the program.

Coach Monica Berube (1st year): “We have a lot of juniors and seniors with experience and I think that will help us. I think we’ll have a pretty good year. It’ll be nice to have two pitchers and our defense will be OK. As long as we get our bats going, we’ll be in good shape.”

Fifth-year senior Kayla Maloney, the two-time Eagle-Tribune MVP, will pitch at Columbia.
