Masha Lange tripled and scored on an overthrow in the fifth inning and Kate Hoadley made it stand up. The freshman fired a 3-hitter as Timberlane blanked Spaulding 1-0. Emily Barrett, Jennifer Trodella and Caroline Salvaneschi came up big in the field.
Freshman Caitlin Catalanotto made her varsity debut count, allowing just four hits and striking out five to earn the victory, and adding a hit and an RBI as Sanborn beat Pembroke 6-3.
Joshua Gallant scored six goals and 12 other Pinkerton players scored in a season-opening 18-3 win over Concord.
Who needs experience?
In her first time competing in the event, Chase Marcotte won the long jump with a 15-9 1/4 as Pentucket bested North Reading 80-65. Marcotte also won the triple jump (33-4 1/2).
In his first varsity game, freshman Chris Desjardins scored three goals to help Whittier down Lynn Tech 15-1.
Amanda Lemire had two doubles in the first inning and Kathleen Lefebre also doubled as Methuen scored nine times in the opening frame in an 18-0, five-inning rout of Pentucket. Both Lemire and Lefebre were 3 for 3 for the Rangers and Chrissy Scionti fired a two-hitter.
Defending Division 3 state champ Windham opened up by drubbing Merrimack Valley 20-2. Big guns were Ali Connors (6), Melissa Cino (5) and Courtney Sweeny (5), who combined for 16 goals.
Freshman Lauren Hiller (12 saves) and Michaela Mello led a strong North Andover defense in a 10-7 win over Newburyport. Pam Coufos scored three goals.
