Final Score

Mighty Maloney

Kayla Maloney struck out 11 and was 3 for 3 with two RBIs as Phillips Academy edged Nobles 4-3 in its season opener. Andover’s Nikki Pelletier added a solo home run for the Big Blue.

Bombs away

Angel Abreu hit a two-run homer estimated at 375 feet, part of a three-hit, six-RBI day as Greater Lawrence crushed Northeast, 19-2 in a five-inning mercy rule game. Javier Franjul crushed a three-run homer and added an RBI double in the onslaught.

Vargas untouchable

Joan Vargas came on to pitch in relief in the third inning, and delivered five innings of shutout, two-hit ball as Lawrence edged Lowell 4-2. Jose Abreu gave the Lancers the lead to stay with a two-run double.

Morin mania

Dan Morin had a triple, drove in three runs and allowed just a single earned run in a complete-game effort to lead Salem to a 12-2 drubbing of Manchester Memorial.

Jumping out

Central Catholic scored four times in the first inning and Karoline Leavitt had a two-run homer in the sixth as Central Catholic beat Haverhill 10-1. Leavitt and leadoff batter Krista Maloney were both 3 for 5.

Nguyen bounces back

After losing eight games in a row, Lina Nguyen turned things around. Breaking serve while trailing 5-4, Nguyen won out for a thrilling 7-5 third-set victory that lifted Methuen tennis to a 3-2 victory over Notre Dame of Tyngsboro.

Murphy’s Law

Neil Murphy set up in front of the net, took a pass from Jared Warren and fired home the goal in double overtime that gave Georgetown a 6-5 victory over Triton.

Sophomore’s career day

Sophomore Hannah Chapman achieved personal bests in the discus, long jump and 100 hurdles, winning all three events, as part of Andover’s 92-43 track victory over Lowell.

Defense, pitching

Salem’s softball team opened its season with a 2-1 win over Memorial, thanks to an 11-strikeout two-hitter by Katelyn Arsenault and two key defensive plays. In the sixth, Rachel Morrissey started a double play with a catch in center field and a relay via Emily O’Brien to third for a double play. In the seventh, Sam Cloutier made a brilliant diving stop at shortstop and threw out the runner.
