UMass Lowell will be competing in the Division 1 America East Conference this fall.
Faulkner for Hazelton
Bishop Guertin has hired Jeremy Faulkner as its new girls basketball coach to replace former Central Catholic standout Scott Hazelton, who resigned to become an assistant women’s coach at UMass Lowell. Faulkner was the head coach at Souhegan, where he led the Sabers to two Division 2 state titles in three years. He has coached extensively with the New England Shooting Stars AAU team.
Average up, power down
At the All-Star break, Haverhill’s Carlos Pena of the Houston Astros has raised his average to .212 and his on-base percentage remains respectable at .325 thanks to 42 walks, but his power numbers are down. He currently has just eight home runs and 25 RBIs, which ranks fourth and sixth on the team respectively. His 87 strikeouts are the second most on the team.
Intertown winding down
The Intertown Babe Ruth League is finally winding down. Triton captured the 13-14 B division Sunday, defeating Seabrook in the finals, while Hamilton-Wenham defeated Triton in the 13-14 A division Tuesday in an exciting 5-4 contest.
The 15-16 division, meanwhile, begins its playoffs this weekend and should wind up next week.
