Sox beat NY with strong outing from Doubront

Star of the Game: Jonny Gomes’ two-run homer in the second inning gave Boston a 3-0 lead. He is batting .338 with four homers, 13 RBIs and eight doubles in 74 at-bats since June 6.

Second Star: Jacoby Ellsbury homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning. It was his fourth long ball this season and his third in his past 10 games.

The Lefty’s Line: Red Sox lefty Felix Doubront went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on just three hits and three walks while striking out five. Doubront is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA in his past six starts. He is 3-1 with a 2.17 ERA and six quality starts in his six career starts vs. the Yankees.

Odds and Ends: RHP Andrew Bailey was placed on the DL with damage to the labrum and capsule in his shoulder. ... RHP Jose De La Torre was recalled from Pawtucket. ... The Red Sox signed relief pitchers Brandon Lyon and Jose Contreras. ... RHP Brandon Workman will be available out of the bullpen today as he was yesterday. But Boston will try to stay away from him so they can start him against the Rays this coming week. ... RHP Clay Buchholz’s neck examination was benign, Farrell said. The righty played catch from 90 feet today and felt “free and easy.” Buchholz will throw again on flat ground before throwing off the mound. ... LHP Andrew Miller had season-ending surgery to repair his injured foot ligament Monday. ... RF Shane Victorino left yesterday’s game in the third inning with left hamstring tightness. He is day-to-day.
