---- — RAYS 3, RED SOX 0
:Star of the Game: Tampa starter Matt Moore hurled a two-hit shutout. The All-Star lefty walked one and struck out four. He threw 109 pitches, 74 for strikes (68 percent).
:Standings: The Rays pulled within a half game of the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.
:Workman’s Line: Red Sox rookie starter Brandon Workman went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.
:Buchholz Update: Ace Clay Buchholz (neck strain) visited Dr. James Andrews and the results of his exam concurred with the results of his diagnosis from Red Sox team doctors. Andrews told Buchholz he’ll feel a little stiffness/discomfort by virtue of returning to pitching shape, Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “I would think there would be a more readiness on his (Buchholz’s) part to push through (the discomfort),” Farrell said.
:Odds and Ends: Catcher David Ross (concussion) will rejoin the Red Sox later this week to be with the team as he continues to recover. He is progressing with all activities, including throwing and hitting. ... The Red Sox stroked just two hits. Mike Napoli and David Ortiz each had one. ... Sox reliever Jose De La Torre pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run (it was earned), on one hit and two walks while striking three. He threw 50 pitches, an effort that was needed after the way the bullpen was used the night before.
