Rivet huge again, Knights qualify for tourney

With its back to the wall, North Andover came through, holding off Pentucket Regional, 3-2, to punch the Knight ticket to the Division 2 North baseball tourney.

Chris Bosco’s RBI hit put North Andover up 3-1 in the top of the seventh, and while starting pitcher Dan Rivet bent in the bottom half, the senior stood tall when it mattered and shut the door.

With the score at 3-2 and runners on second-and-third, Rivet reared back and finished the complete game win with a strikeout.

Moved to the leadoff spot, Tyler Whitley had a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs for the Knights, who use the Sullivan Rule to qualify for the postseason at 7-13.

MILESTONE FOR WARNOCK, HORNETS REACH CLANCY FINALS

R.J. Warnock embraced the challenge of Lynn English and Vanderbilt-bound Ben Bowden.

The North Reading senior was simply untouchable, firing a four-hitter to beat English and Bowden, 6-0, in the opening round of the Nipper Clancy Tournament at Fraser Field.

Today at 4, the Hornets face St. Mary’s of Lynn for the Clancy title with Ryan McAuliffe headed to the hill.

With the win, Warnock moved to 9-1 on the year and moves into a second-place tie on the Hornets’ all-time win list with 26. He anc current Hornets’ assistant Steve Palazzolo have 26 career high school wins. Dennis Livingston is the all-time leader with 30.

ROYALS FALL IN SPOFFORD SEMIS

Newburyport (11-7) will face off against Triton (9-10) this afternoon for the sixth annual Bert Spofford Memorial Tournament championship after the Clippers took down Georgetown (12-7) in a 10-inning marathon yesterday 4-1.

“It was two teams that wanted it,” said Clippers coach Steve Malenfant. “It was your typical Georgetown/Newburyport game that we have seen in recent years. They played tough, we played tough.”

Royals starter Pat Slack doubled home Colby Ingraham, who had singled in the fourth for a 1-0 Royals lead. Newburyport ied it in the sixth with a single run, chasing Slack, who was dynamite for six-plus.

Slack came back in to the mound in the 10th, where a couple errors proved costly to the Royals, sending them to today’s 10 a.m. consolation.

“We just didn’t get that one hit,” said Royals coach Justin Spurr. “And we left a ton of guys on base. That’s pretty much the story of it. When things like that happen, you’re destined for those bad innings and those bad plays.”
