---- — Lacrosse elite

Jennifer Russell, the former Brooks star and University of North Carolina All-American from Andover, is starting on defense for the USA in the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in Ontario. The Harvard assistant coach had a ground ball and a draw control as the US won its opener 17-7 yesterday over England.

Cakes are baking

UTL birthday wishes go out to University of Michigan athletics chief marketing officer Hunter Lochmann of Andover (turns 41 Monday), Haverhill lax scoring sensation Kristy Robertson (turns 18 Monday), former BC field hockey All-American Chelsey Feole of Windham (turns 25 Thursday), Emmanuel point guard DJ Fazio of Methuen (turns 22 Thursday) and ex-Central football/baseball standout Zak Adamopoulos (turns 23 Thursday).

Honored by Revs

Retiring North Andover coach Bill Tarbox will be honored by the Revolution for his 40 years of coaching. He’ll be an honorary captain in the Aug. 4 match against Toronto FC.

Friends and former players can contact Justin Cuomo at 508-549-0249 or justinc@revolutionsoccer.net to purchase club seats at a discount.

will be missed

If there has ever been a more kind-hearted local coach than retiring North Andover girls basketball coach Sue Breen, well, I never met her or him. An absolute pleasure to deal with.

Cy cyr

A typographical error in an Eagle-Tribune headline could result in a new nickname. Methuen Legion ace Cam Cyr was referred to as “Cy”. I like it, Cy Cyr. That works perfectly for someone who often pitches like a Cy Young candidate.

Silver sydney

Switch-hitting centerfielder Sydney Littlefield of Methuen helped the Northeast softball team to a silver medal at the Bay State Games. She started five games and her coach, Jesse Bilafer, complimented her for her performance at the plate and in the field.

merrimack in the nhl

Four Merrimack hockey players were at NHL Prospect Camps this week.

They were incoming freshman Chris Leblanc (Ottawa), forward Mike Collins (Minnesota), forward Quinn Gould (Chicago) and goalie Sam Marotta (Vancouver).

Gould had a ready-made welcoming party as former Merrimack coach Ron Anderson and former Merrimack goalie and assistant Mike Doneghey work for the Blackhawks.

Coach Turiano

Marc Turiano of Andover, a 2010 graduate of Salem State, has been named the women’s volleyball coach at Salem State. Turiano played at St. John’s Prep and was an assistant at St. John’s, Salem State and Missouri State University-West Plains.

Beyond com-pare

UMass Lowell distance standout Ben Pare of Methuen has one of my favorite twitter handles: @parraynotpear. Now I can’t mispronounce his name!
