King blasts homer to carry Lowell

Aaron King blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Spinners 4-3 over State College yesterday.

Tzu-Wei Lin added two hits and an RBI for Lowell, which improved to 17-12.

Corey Littrell pitched the first 2.0 innings, keeping State College off the scoreboard.

Lowell’s Simon Mercedes hurled the next 5.0 innings. He earned the win, allowing two runs, both earned, on nine hits and no walks while striking out five batters.

Matt Maloney pitched the final 2.0 innings. He picked up the save, allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks while striking out three.

Jamie Callahan (1-1, 5.82) looks to help the Spinners take the rubber game of this three-game series today at 7:05 p.m.

Doyle takes loss

Salem High grad and Portland Sea Dogs starter Terry Doyle pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on eight hits and one walk while striking out five. He took the loss in Portland’s 7-5 deficit to Reading.

Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew, playing in a rehab game for Portland, went 1 for 4 with an RBI double. He is expected to play six innings at shortstop for Portland today and then be in Boston’s lineup Saturday against the Yankees.

Fisher Cats suffer rout

Despite three hits and an RBI from Brad Glenn, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats lost 9-2 to Trenton.

Deck McGuire started for New Hampshire and went 6.0 innings allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out four.
