Price throws gem, Rays pull within half game of Sox

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — RAYS 5, RED SOX 1

Star of the Game: Reigning AL Cy Young winner David Price was tremendous, throwing a complete game, five-hitter to lead the Rays.

Wil The Thrill: Rays rookie outfielder Wil Myers went 2 for 4 with a walk and two RBIs. Myers will be featured in this Sunday’s Eagle-Tribune Baseball Q&A.

The Standings: The Rays have pulled within a half a game of first place in the AL East. They have a chance to overtake the Red Sox tonight when they send RHP Jeremy Hellickson (9-3, 4.62) against Red Sox RHP John Lackey (7-7, 2.95) at 7:10 p.m. on NESN.

Offensive Issues: The Red Sox have had two complete games thrown against them in this four-game set, which concludes today. Matt Moore shut them out Monday and Price delivered yesterday. Both are lefties. The Red Sox’ lone run came in the seventh on a solo homer by first baseman Mike Napoli, who was 2 for 3.

Done Deal: The Red Sox officially signed the gritty Dustin Pedroia to an eight-year contract beginning in 2014 and continuing through 2021. Pedroia already is second to Bobby Doerr among club second basemen in hits (1,146), runs (618), doubles (270), homers (96), RBIs (467), walks (400), extra-base hits (378), total bases (1,728), and All- Star selections (4).
