Post 4 rallies, stuns Andover for must win

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — HAVERHILL — Nick Comei came to the rescue last night, rallying the Haverhill Legion Post 4 team to a pivotal 5-4 victory over Andover Post 8 at Trinity Stadium.

The victory lifted Post 4 to 15-7-1 overall with one game left in the regular season, Friday against Peabody, and all but cements a spot in the district playoffs.

But for six innings, it looked like Andover (14-8-1) had a playoff spot virtually clinched as it held a 4-0 lead.

Haverhill, however, scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, the key blow being a two-run single by J.T. Ruth, and then got the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Comei started the seventh with a single and Nathan Frongillo followed with a single. After George Gouthier was intentionally walked to load the bases, Comei scored on a groundout and Frongillo then got the game-winner on a suicide squeeze by Matt McIntosh.

“Everybody just went wild when that happened,” said Haverhill assistant Dan Francescone.

That made a winner of Comei, who relieved starter Shane Surrette in the fifth and just gave up one unearned run the rest of the way.

For Andover, Burton Deady had a two-run homer in the fourth and Andrew Bruno chipped in with an RBI single in the fifth.

With just two days remaining in the regular season, Middleton has one of the four District 8 playoff spots locked up. It’s trailed by Newburyport (15-7-1), Haverhill (15-7-1) and Methuen (14-7-1), with Andover still, if barely, alive.

Methuen could have locked up a spot last night but it fell to Danvers 3-1. Cam Cyr was the tough-luck loser and Nick Delois had Methuen’s only two hits and RBI.
