---- — Douglas Morin had a Thanksgiving to remember in 1978. The 5-6, 155-pound junior rushed for 282 yards and three TDs as Greater Lawrence blitzed Whittier 34-12. The next year the rough and tough Morin made Eagle-Tribune All-Star as a defensive lineman!
He wasn’t the only little guy to shine on Turkey Day that year.
Although just 5-7, 140, Manny Silva was the Big Manny on Campus. He didn’t throw often but he made them count. The Andover senior completed five of six passes, including his ninth and 10th TD passes of the season, as the Golden Warriors rallied to beat Central Catholic 16-10. ... In other 1978 action, Chris Dekeon (148 rushing yards, 3 TDs) did it all but it wasn’t enough as Manchester Central nipped Haverhill in OT 22-21. That gave Dekeon 10 TDs on the year. ... It was the Willis-Helfrich Show as North Andover roughed up Masconomet 34-0. Future Dartmouth defensive back Paul Willis took care of the offense (95 rushing yards, 2 TDs, 51 passing yards) and Joe Helfrich (2 interceptions) anchored the defense. ... Kevin Tarr (57 rushing yards) and Kevin Bradley (119 passing yards, TD) played well but it wasn’t enough as Dracut shaded Methuen 14-12. ... Jimmy Moran (TD) and Dave Fabrizio (interception) led Lawrence in a 26-7 loss to Lowell.
1988: DiBurro scores 4 TDs in Haverhill’s big romp
Jeff DiBurro rushed for 227 yards and scored four times as Haverhill whipped Salem 32-6. Bert Tucker scored for the Blue Devils. ... Central Catholic beat Andover, 27-13, to improve to 7-3, it’s best record since 1975. Shaun Duffy and Chris Kalil each scored twice. For Andover, Jack Dalton caught TD passes of 73 yards (on the first play from scrimmage of the game) and 13 yards from Kurt Brucato. That gave Dalton an area-leading 8 TD grabs. ... Manchester blanked Georgetown 12-0 and Lowell shut out Lawrence 13-0. ... Methuenites thought their 6-3 club might be able to deprive Dracut of a Super Bowl berth but Methuen turned the ball over six times in a 33-0 shellacking. ...
Chris Rozzi might have been the most dominant player in the state. He rushed for 212 yards, rolled up an amazing 430 yards of total offense and scored five times as North Andover tripped Masconomet 47-29. ... Bill O’Leary scored twice for North Reading, which was edged by Lynnfield 26-22. ... Area scoring champ Steve Puleo rushed for 219 yards and three TDs as Pentucket rallied past Triton 21-14. ... Mike Smith scored twice and Mike Huberdeau found Paul Chase on two TD passes (27 and 40 yards) as Whittier beat Chelsea 34-20. ... Mike Hamel’s 66-yard TD run was the difference as Greater Lawrence beat Austin Prep 6-0.
O’Connell stars, but no luck for Methuen
On Thanksgiving in 1982, Methuen beat Dracut 16-0 in front of 7,500 at Nicholson Field. Mike O’Connell threw a TD pass and Barry Tardugno had a TD run. Despite going 9-0-1, Methuen was edged out by St. John’s and Whitman-Hanson for the EMass. Super Bowl berth.
Also in 1982, Jamie Durso’s 98-yard pick-6 was the play of the game as Greater Lawrence nipped Haverhill 14-8.
In 1979, Greater Lawrence recovered a fumble in the final minute and stunned Whittier 8-7 on a Hail Mary by Shawn Owen to Dan Loughlin. Owen added the winning 2-point rush. In the 1965 Turkey Day game, QB Joe Casey led Lawrence to 22 points in a 7:34 stretch in the fourth but the Lancers needed 23 points. The Lancers fell to Lowell 23-22.
His three children, Mike Jr., Billy and Merry, were all sports captains at North Andover High. But Mike Eagan Sr. was an athlete, too. On Thanksgiving 1972, the Lynn Item praised the lineman’s play on both sides of the ball in Lynnfield’s 38-6 win over North Reading.
