"Very good chance for Hanigan trade"

“VERY GOOD CHANCE”

FOR HANIGAN TRADE

As I wrote in yesterday’s baseball column, major league catcher and Andover High graduate Ryan Hanigan appears on his way out of Cincinnati now that the Reds have signed Brayan Pena to back up Devin Mesoraco.

I pointed out that the Red Sox should consider trading for the 33-year-old catcher.

Hanigan and his agent Tom O’Connell are preparing for a trade.

“We’ve had several conversations with the premise on there’s a very, very good chance he’ll be traded at some point,” O’Connell told The Eagle-Tribune.

Hanigan has a .359 career on-base percentage and is considered an elite defender. The catcher struggled offensively this past season, but he suffered through a sprained wrist and oblique injury.

“Ryan’s been rehabbing his wrist (and is) almost 100 percent,” O’Connell said. “I anticipate him having strong 2014 season. He dealt with nagging injuries from spring training throughout the (2013) season. But with that said, Ryan is not only a strong offensive option for any club, but he’s one of the best defensive catchers in the game.”

PHILLY’S PHENOM

The Philadelphia 76ers have to be quite pleased with how they did in the 2013 draft, adding two Massachusetts natives, Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel.

Noel (left knee) hasn’t played yet and might miss the season. But the Everett resident should make for quite the duo with Hamilton’s Carter-Williams, who is the NBA’s top rookie so far.

Carter-Williams is averaging 17.3 points per game, 7.4 assists per game and 5.7 rebounds per game through 11 games.

His stats are better than at Syracuse where he averaged 8.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg and 5.2 apg in 66 games over two seasons.

Here is link to a brief video documentary of Carter-Williams:
