Spinners throw one away

BURLINGTON — A comebacker to the mound and potential inning-ending double play turned into a nightmare for the Lowell Spinners as the throw got past the catcher allowing the winning run to score as the Vermont Lake Monsters stole a 3-2 walk-off win from the Spinners last night at Centennial Field.

The loss extended a streak of alternating wins and losses the Spinners have been on since July 11.

The Lake Monsters left a pair on in both the second and third innings and the Spinners (22-18) took advantage in the fourth inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Danny Bethea and Aaron King led off with back-to-back singles, with Cleuluis Rondon moving both men into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With Colorado at the plate, a wild pitch brought in Bethea and King scored on a sacrifice fly from Colorado to give the Spinners the early lead.

Vermont (22-20) cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning.

After the Spinners were h.eld off the board in the top half of the ninth, the lake Monsters grabbed the win on the sloppy play.

Offensively, the Spinners were led by King and Rondon who each had two hits. King snapped a 0-for-18 streak with his two hits, while Bethea picked up a hit in his fourth straight game since joining the team.

Corey Littrell started for the Spinners and went a season-high 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit and two walks, striking out four.
