HAVERHILL — Haverhill Post 4 lost a heartbreaker last night to end its season with its second straight loss in the American Legion District 8 playoffs.
Billerica scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to eliminate Post 4 at Haverhill Stadium.
Starter Shane Surette (6 ip, 7 hits, 5 strikeouts, 0 walks) entered the seventh inning with a 2-1 lead, but a pair of Billerica hits put runners at first and third with no outs. Reliever Paul Mahoney induced a double play, but Billerica tied the game at 2-2. Billerica parlayed a walk and three hits off of Mahoney and reliever Nick Comei for the game winning run in the eighth.
Steve Jaskelevicus (3 for 4) doubled with two out in the bottom of the eighth, but Billerica starter Pat Gallagher (8 innings, 2 runs, 7 hits, two strikeouts) got the last out on a foul pop to end the Haverhill (16-9-1) season.
J.T Ruth scored both Haverhill runs, on an RBI single by Comei (2 for 4) and a sacrifice fly by Nathan Frongillo.
Post 4, which got solid pitching all year, scored only two runs in 15 innings during the playoffs.
