Bronze for furey

Methuen’s Sean Furey placed third at the U.S. Nationals over the weekend in Des Moines. The 2012 javelin Olympian’s best throw was 253-7.

Father’s day gift

Zach Whitener, 13, and his father, Lonnie, shared a memorable Father’s Day. On Sunday both fired holes-in-one on the 115-yard par-3 6th hole at River Pointe Golf Club in Richmond, Texas.

7th-grade scholarship

It’s unusual but not unheard of that sophomore QB De’Andre Johnson of Jacksonville already has committed to Florida State. What’s eye-popping is his 7th grade brother Tyreke Johnson has offers from Vanderbilt and Fla. Atlantic.

no stopping wilmarth

Former Eagle-Tribune tennis MVP Lauren Wilmarth from Andover and Phillips Academy is on quite the career path. She continued her career at UConn, where she graduated with honors in just three years. She just completed her first year of veterinary school at Cornell.

All-Scholastic headscratcher

Sooner or later

Wow, quarterback David Cornwell of Norman North High said no to the hometown Oklahoma Sooners and will be attending Alabama. Cornwell just won a controversial waiver to play his senior year after transferring to North.

gimme a break

Hard to believe the politically correct types are up in arms over NFL players using the word kill.

Cup runneth over

Former Merrimack College hockey coach Ron Anderson won his second ring with the Chicago Blackhawks. He’s been with the organization for 14 years, the last five as director of player recruitment.

5th-grade phenom

Florida 11-year-old Briana Williams has run a 12.87 100 meters and a 26.29 200 meters. Those times would have ranked fourth and third, respectively, in our area this spring.

Bizzarro world

Add to the All-Name team North Carolina outfielder Skye Bolt and Gennaro Bizzarro, who is perfectly named for his profession ... NBA player agent.

Brick house

BC football just got a commitment from the offspring of a Commodores star. No, it wasn’t Nicole Richie but Florida wide receiver Gabe McClary. His father, Thomas McClary, was co-founder of the group.
