Solimine takes 14th

NORTHFIELD — It wasn’t the best of seasons for the Haverhill girls cross country team, but it was a fine season for senior Jackie Solimine and junior Riley Gilmore.

Solimine finished 14th in the Division 1 All-State meet yesterday with a time of 19:43.46 on the difficult 3.1-mile course at Northfield Mountain. Gilmore came in 27th at 20:07.89.

“Jackie ran a nice, steady race and she and Riley were consistent all year,” said Haverhill coach Mike Maguire. “I couldn’t have asked for a better performance meet-in and meet-out.”

Sandwiched in between the Hillie pair in 21st was Central Catholic sophomore Tiffany Simione, who continued her late-season surge with a time of 19:56.4.

Another rapidly improving sophomore, Andover’s Sarah Rothman, came in 21st in 19:56.4, while Caroline MacDonald came in 64th for Central and Andover’s Meghan McPhee was 82nd.

Peabody, led by star senior Catarina Rocha, was the Division 1 team champion with 108 points, nine fewer than runner-up Lincoln-Sudbury. Rocha was a runaway winner in 18:06.12, 45 seconds faster than runner-up Christine Davis of Acton-Boxboro.

In the Division 2 All-State meet, North Reading junior Nicole Roberts completed her strong second half of the season, as she came in 14th with an excellent time of 19:43.09 on the demanding course, just edging Solimine for the fastest time of the day. The only other local runner, Pentucket’s Marissa Porter, came in 54th at 20:41.38.

Bishop Feehan won the Division 2 team crown by 17 points over runner-up Tyngsboro with Cape Ann League power Hamilton-Wenham settling for fourth in the 19-team field.
