Broderick, Robertson sign
Two Haverhill High seniors signed letters-of-intent in the gymnasium yesterday afternoon. Sarah Broderick, who captured two state titles Sunday, completed a terrific two days by signing with Division 1 UNH for swimming and Kristy Robertson signed with Southern New Hampshire University to play lacrosse. UNH has a strong tradition in swimming.
Derry’s Burke honored
WPI freshman wrestler Tanner Burke of Derry was selected New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week last week after winning the 149-pound weight class as the Engineers opened their season at the Roger Williams Invitational. The former Pinkerton standout went 5-0, including first-period pins in his opening two matches.
Return of Namvar
After taking a two-year leave of absence, Sobhan Namvar has returned to coach the Andover wrestling team this winter. Namvar was Andover’s first coach but stepped down two years ago, being replaced by Jamie Durkin. Durkin will be an assistant at Central Catholic this winter.
The Cronin switch
Longtime swimming coach Carlton Cronin will be an assistant in the winter for Andover instead of Haverhill High. But Haverhill will receive his son, former Hillie standout C.J. Cronin, in exchange. C.J. had been assisting at Andover.
The move will help both of the Cronins. Coaching at Andover will be closer to Carlton’s business and C.J. teaches in the Haverhill school system.
Should be tired
Sophomore Cam Pavao had a fine season for the Methuen cross country team, but you couldn’t blame him if he was a bit sluggish at times. His mother, Rose Chappie, had two sets of twins within 10 months. A pair of girls came a year ago October and a boy and a girl arrived, a bit prematurely, in August.
“They woke me up a few times but it hasn’t been too bad,” said Pavao.
Helping out Governor’s
The Governor’s Academy football team finished its second straight regular season undefeated and stayed perfect by winning the Tom Flaherty Bowl last Saturday against Cheshire, and two local linemen played a big role for the Govs. They are junior tackle Mark Hoffman from Groveland and 6-3, 235-pound sophomore Tyler Harrington from Haverhill. Hoffman broke his thumb midway through the season but came back strong after missing two games.
D’Agostino perspective
The improvement made in college cross country by former Masconomet enthusiast Abbey D’Agostino of Dartmouth continues to amaze. Looking at the best times at the Cape Ann League Open at Bradley Palmer State Park, as provided by running guru Bill Varney of North Andover, D’Agostino’s best time of 18:32 is only the ninth best, more than a minute behind the 17:30 that was run by North Andover’s Kirsten Kasper.
Flutie in running
Heading into Thanksgiving, Natick quarterback Troy Flutie, the nephew of Doug Flutie, is battling for the most touchdowns thrown in Eastern Mass. Andover’s C.J. Scarpa leads with 30, Cambridge’s David Maaghul has 29 and Flutie is at 27.
Among the private school ranks, Roxbury Latin’s Mackay Lowrie had a whopping 35 TD passes in just eight games.
