Reggies rematch
The Greater Lawrence football team got its wish yesterday when it was announced that it will face 5-6 Greater New Bedford Thursday in the large school State Vocational Large School Bowl at the Manning Bowl in Lynn at 7 p.m.
The Reggies, who whipped Whittier 42-12 on Thanksgiving, will bring an 8-3 record against the same team that beat them, 19-16, in last year’s Voke Bowl.
“We want a chance to redeem ourselves,” said Reggies quarterback Marcos Ortiz.
Farnham breaks through
Congrats to North Andover’s Bobby Farnham, who recently netted his first AHL point. Currently a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Farnham had an assist in a recent victory.
The former Eagle-Tribune hockey Player of the Year while at Brooks has played in seven games for the Penguins this season after playing briefly last season for the Worcester Sharks (3 games) and Providence Bruins (3 games) without a point.
Loiseau one step away
Former Merrimack College star Shawn Loiseau may not be on an NFL roster just yet, but he’s very close. The former Shrewsbury High standout is currently a member of the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad. Earlier this week he tweeted out a picture of his No. 59 Colts jersey. He has been looking for an opportunity since an impressive preseason with the Houston Texans.
Total fake-out
Fans at Andover’s Thanksgiving Day matchup with Central Catholic may have noticed that Golden Warriors injured linebacker Mark Zavrl was in uniform Thursday.
No, Zavrl did not make the world’s fastest recovery from a torn ACL, an injury he suffered just seven weeks ago. He looked game-ready, helmet and all, more for moral purposes.
Album release day
Haverhill’s Jillian Cardarelli, who has become a favorite performing the national anthem before both Celtics and Bruins games, will debut her new album tonight in Haverhill. Cardarelli, a country singer/songwriter, is holding a release party for her new EP “Just Me & You” — which was recorded in country music hotbed Nashville.
She will be returning to the Garden to perform the anthem for the Celtics in January, flying back from Nashville for the occasion.
So long Darko
The Darko Milicic era in Boston ended before it really started when the Celtics waived the former No. 2 overall pick Wednesday. Milicic, who reportedly wanted to return home to Serbia to be with his ill mother, played in just one regular season game for the Celtics.
This corner believes Darko’s greatest moment as a Celtic was likely at media day when a certain reporter (myself) asked about how he ended up in Boston, referring to the free agent process.
Mikicic jokingly responded, “On a plane,” causing much of the reporters to break into laughter.
Another Rivers
The Celtics recently assigned first-round pick Fab Melo to their NBA Developmental League team the Maine Red Claws. While there he won’t be coached by Doc Rivers, but he will be spending plenty of time playing with someone close to the C’s head man.
One of Melo’s teammate with the Red Claws is Rivers’ son Jeremiah Rivers. The guard, who played college ball at Georgetown and Indiana, played for the Knicks in the summer league after playing in the Basketball League of Serbia last season.
This isn’t the first time there has been a family connection in Maine. The Red Claws’ first head coach was Austin Ainge, the son of Celtics GM Danny Ainge.
Unlikely connection
Here’s a silly sports fact for you. Patriots running back Shane Vereen is the second cousin of longtime character actor Ben Vereen, who appeared in the iconic miniseries “Roots” along with shows ranging from “How I Met Your Mother” to “Law & Order” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
