Hometown Scoreboard

Methuen muscle

Sophomore Dan Cormier of Methuen broke the 3-year-old Stonehill shot put record with a season-opening 46-11 1/2 heave to place second at the Boston Indoor Invitational. He also grabbed a fifth in the weight throw (46-3 3/4).

proud coach

Lawrence football coach Mike Yameen proudly points out that three of his ex-players were on Division 3 NCAA playoff teams. They were sophomore defensive back Ony Ramos (30 tackles, 3 interceptions at Framingham State), junior defensive end Darius Timmons (reserve at Framingham) and junior cornerback Dimar Torres (12 tackles at Bridgewater State).

soccer sensation

In cased you missed it, Londonderry senior soccer All-American Lydia Simmons, who plans on taking a prep year, has committed to Vanderbilt.

Raider ramblings

Central linebacker Markus Edmunds, one of three sophomores named first-team All-MVC, has the good genes. His father, Mark, was the former bruising Merrimack basketball star from Londonderry.

And if you see Central gridder Tommy Jenoski tomorrow, which him a happy 18th birthday.

Tweet from mia

The North Andover Fire U12 soccer team received a Tweet from none other than soccer legend Mia Hamm (@MiaHamm).

She Tweeted: “Good luck to the North Andover Fire: Kate (Cheevers), Olivia (Adamic), Ava (Sauls), Riley (Cinquegrano), Madison (Landry), Liz (Steinberg), Izzy (Ceraso), Emma (Liporto), Kylie (Palumbo), Molly (Connolly), Peyton (Sportelli) and Christina (Farmer). Listen to your coach.”

Apparently a former Tar Heel lives on the North Shore and made the request to Hamm, the wife of ex-Red Sox star Nomar Garciaparra.

Coach delahoz

Ex-Central Catholic point guard Junior DeLaHoz is the new head coach at the Hillside School, a boys boarding school for grades 5-9 in Marlboro.

national champions

A couple changes to our recent list of local national champions. The Trinity lacrosse champ should have been Liz Bruno not Amanda Bruno. And sharp eyed reader Tom Hibino of Andover pointed out Andover’s Rob Oppenheim won the 2002 Division 2 team golf title at Rollins. All Oppenheim did was sink and 18-foot birdie putt on the last hole to clinch the win!

Sparse attendance

The Globe reported the total attendance at the six EMass Super Bowls games at Gillette Stadium was just 14,678, down from 25,457 last year.

That’s just a bit off the high school record for a single game: 50,988 for Kensington vs. Bennett in Buffalo in 1948.

Over 41,000 fans watched Indiana basketball recruit Damon Bailey win the 1990 Indiana high school title at the Hoosier Dome.

Spaz indictment

A few days after Frank Spaziani fired was fired by BC, with a new coach not even in place, Tabor’s blue-chip lineman Tevin Montgomery, committed to BC. That’s a pretty good indictment of Spaz.

ultimate winners

Ex-BC and Notre Dame Hall of Fame football coach Frank Leahy fittingly grew up in tiny Winner, S.D. (current population 2,897).

The late coach was a line coach at Fordham when Lawrence’s Ralph Wolfendale Sr. (1932-34) and Vince Lombardi (1934-36) were starring on the line for the once-vaunted Rams.

Thomas’ promise

St. John’s Prep junior Johnathan Thomas, who was brilliant in the playoff win over Andover with 209 rushing yards and three TDs, already has an offer from UMass.

Cakes are baking

UTL birthday wishes go out to Virginia lacrosse player Dana Boyle of Londonderry (21 today) and former Central basketball great Scott Hazelton (turns 31 Tuesday).
