DeLaHoz breaks into coaching ranks

---- — Coach delahoz

Ex-Central Catholic point guard Junior DeLaHoz is the new head coach at the Hillside School, a boys boarding school for grades 5-9 in Marlboro.

Sparse attendance

The Globe reported the total attendance at the six EMass Super Bowls games at Gillette Stadium was just 14,678, down from 25,457 last year.

That’s just a bit off the high school record for a single game: 50,988 for Kensington vs. Bennett in Buffalo in 1948.

Over 41,000 fans watched Indiana basketball recruit Damon Bailey win the 1990 Indiana high school title at the Hoosier Dome.

Spaz indictment

A few days after Frank Spaziani was fired by BC, with a new coach not even in place, Tabor’s blue-chip lineman Tevin Montgomery committed to BC. That’s quite the indictment of Spaz.

To be fair, much of his struggles can be blamed on former AD Gene DeFilippo, who made a huge mistake first promoting the longtime defensive coordinator to head coach then stunningly signing him to an extension.

ultimate winners

Ex-BC and Notre Dame Hall of Fame football coach Frank Leahy fittingly grew up in tiny Winner, S.D. (current population 2,897).

He was a line coach at Fordham when Lawrence’s Ralph Wolfendale Sr. (1932-34) and legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi (1934-36) were starring on the line for the once-vaunted football power in the Bronx.

Cakes are baking

UTL birthday wishes go out to Virginia lacrosse player Dana Boyle of Londonderry (21 today) and former Central basketball great Scott Hazelton (turns 31 Tuesday).

Lowell blue-chipper

Lowell has produced Division 1 basketball players like Tracy Mitchell (TCU), Ramon Rivera (Houston), Central’s Leo Parent (Manhattan), Scott Stapleton (Richmond), Alex Oriakhi (UConn/Missouri) and Ron Giplaye (Providence/East Tennessee).

Add to the list 6-5 Tilton sophomore Terrance Mann, who recently got an offer from BC. His mother is Northeastern women’s coach Daynia La-Force Mann.

belated gold medal

It took eight years but Dartmouth grad Adam Nelson is finally getting his gold medal. The International Olympic Committee now has the technology to do more sophisticated testing on frozen urine samples and four throwers were stripped of their 2004 medals including Ukraine’s Yuriy Bilonog, who beat Nelson for gold in the shot put.

That’s great news for Carl Wallin, who coached Nelson with the Big Green. Maybe he’ll get another gold in 2016 from another ex-star, Methuen Olympic javelin thrower Sean Furey.

Chevy runs deep

In case you were wondering about Pinkerton’s Eagle-Tribune All-Star field hockey player Chevy Collins, that’s just a nickname. Her real first name is Chavonne.

Thomas’ promise

St. John’s Prep junior Johnathan Thomas, who was brilliant in the playoff win over Andover with 209 rushing yards and three TDs, already has an offer from UMass.
