Methuen's Agboola leads league in rebounding

winning mvc wars

Junior tri-captain Rashidat Agboola of Methuen is enjoying a banner year for 8-3 BU. The 6-1 forward leads America East with 9.1 rebounds a game and is averaging 9.7 points and 1.5 blocks a game. She scored a season-high 20 points vs. UMass last week.

Agboola got the best of old MVC rivals Katie Zenevitch (Central) and Nicole Boudreau (Andover) of BC early in the year and Saturday her 12 points and 11 rebounds helped beat Marist and Andover’s Natalie Gomez-Martinez in OT.

Christmas correction

I made a mistake on the Greater Lawrence Boys Christmas Tourney pairings. The correct semifinals are Central Catholic-Salem winner vs. North Andover-Andover winner at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27 and Pinkerton-Greater Lawrence winner vs. Lawrence-Methuen winner at 7:15 p.m.

95-year-old fan

Sorry Joanne Muldoon, but my favorite senior citizen sports fan is John Small of Haverhill. The 95-year-old is keeping me on my toes with his thought-provoking sports e-mails. Small played tennis until age 85!

licare respect

It’s amazing the respect, even awe, fellow coaches have for the great former North Andover High coach Bob Licare.

At the Greater Lawrence Christmas Tourneys banquet, speaker Greg Herenda, the UMass Lowell coach, spoke glowingly of the coach.

“When I tell you about genius, I’ve been around some great ones,” said Herenda, who is in his 30th year of college coaching. “But I’ve never been around a mind like Mr. Licare.”

Family ties

One of the candidates for the Florida International in Miami head football job is reportedly Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. CBSSports.com’s Bruce Feldman pointed out he is the son of the former Miami mayor. That would be one way to get all sorts of government perks.

syracuse mystery

There is a strange story involving former Hamilton-Wenham great Michael Carter-Williams, who is putting up All-American numbers are Syracuse. There are pictures, supposedly of him, getting arrested at a local mall for stealing. He’s denying it but it is the talk of the town.

I always get a kick out of fact the former police chief, Dennis Duval, was an All-American under coach Jim Boeheim. Talk about a sweetheart set-up for Mr. Sourpuss Boeheim.

Wrestling with tragedy

Eagle-Tribune wrestling guru Dave Dyer proudly put together a lengthy list of NFL stars who also made names for themselves on the mats. I didn’t have the heart to mention that Jovan Belcher, who had just committed that stunning murder-suicide, was a high school All-American wrestler on Long Island.

Prep honors

New Hampton’s Ken Miyachi of Andover, Pingree’s Johnny Spears of Haverhill and Choate’s Jerickson Fedrick of Salem earned All-New England Prep School honors in football. Spears, a fourth-year junior who started off at Georgetown High, had a monstrous year with 18 TDs in only six games.
