David Kitchen won the 50 and 100 freestyle in convincing fashion and was on two winning relays as Central Catholic defeated Haverhill 92-78.

Licciardello starts strong

Whittier Tech’s Anthony Licciardello scored a goal and added an assist to lead Amesbury-Whittier 2-1 over North Reading in the season opener for both teams.

Central boys roll; NA girls win

Central Catholic’s Jeremy Zannini won the 55 meter hurdles in 8.0 to lead the Raiders 56-30 over North Andover in boys track.

On the girls side, North Andover’s Eleni Coufos won the 600 in 1:47.9 as the Scarlet Knights won 47-39 over Central.

Block party

Jessica Brito recorded 10 blocks as Notre Dame girls basketball won 40-16 over Northeast in its season opener. Yaniery Martinez added 18 points and five steals while Shanelle Bonilla had seven assists.

Victory on new mat

Pentucket’s wrestling team celebrated the unveiling of a new mat with a 46-15 victory over Salem. Jeff Funk, Brett Connolly an Mike McCarron all had first-period pins for the Sachems.

Konovalchik returns

Brooks junior Andrew Konovalchik, out the entire football season and the start of wrestling with a knee injury, returned to action with a 38-second pin in a 50-28 loss to Milton Academy.

Comeback mat win

Trailing by 10 points with two matches remaining, Methuen got pins from Christian Monserrat and Aaron Labrecque to pull out a 39-37 win over Xaverian. Gio Rivera grabbed a pivotal 9-8 overtime decision at 170.

Fast pin, thrilling win

Salem’s wrestling team edged Exeter 38-37 in a thriller thanks partly to a stunning eight-second pin by senior heavyweight Dom Gigante, who is back in the sport after taking two years off. The Blue Devils also had pins of 18 seconds by Jon Rheaume and 38 seconds by Tyler Siverhus.

Big Hillie win

The Haverhill girls track team pulled off a big opening win, 48-38 over powerhouse Lowell. Kristy Robertson doubled in the high jump and 600, Sam Wise was first in the 1,000 and on the pivotal winning relay and Kerrin Thomas was also on the relay and had a key second-place finish in the 600.

In the boys meet, which was won by Lowell, Dan Burrows had a PR second-place throw of 49-7 1/2 in the shot put.

Shines in goal

In his first varsity game as starting goalie, Methuen junior Austin Brown “was fantastic” said head coach Denny Egan, recording 30 saves in a 1-1 tie with Tewksbury.
