Windham bounces back in big way

Windham's offense averages 10.8 yards per play

WINDHAM — Coach Bill Raycraft called his team’s performance “sloppy” and “not as clean as we need it to be.”

A cynic might say that’s just coach speak for “I don’t want my guys to get overconfident.”

While the Windham coach found reasons to critique the Jaguars’ performance, the laymen looking on were thrilled with yesterday’s convincing 49-6 victory over John Stark. The blowout came one week after Windham faced its only adversity of the season in a 42-25 thumping at Plymouth.

“We obviously wanted to see how we’d bounce back,” said senior running back Kevin Cooney, who scored three of Windham’s seven touchdowns. “And the score shows we did. We put almost 50 points on the board, so we bounced back from that loss.”

Starting the game an hour later than originally scheduled because of SAT testing in the area, Windham wasted no time washing out the bad taste of last week’s loss as Joe Lorenz hooked up with Joe Frake for the first of their two touchdown passes to cap its first possession of the game.

The Jaguars (5-1) did the most of their damage behind an offensive line that helped Windham average 10.2 yards on each of the 39 rushing attempts that netted 399 yards.

Cooney needed only six carries to amass 167 yards, scoring on runs of 54, 25 and 36.

“There’s nothing but daylight for me, which is awesome,” Cooney said of the holes. “We couldn’t do it without our line, so I give them all the props. They get us in the end zone and that gets us the (win).”

Defensive front four: While the offense was averaging 10.8 yards on its 47 plays from scrimmage, the defense limited John Stark (1-5) to 58 rushing yards on 30 attempts (1.9 yard average). Ends Jacob Estevez and Chris Ferri and tackles David Crichton and Artem Aristov led a charge that had eight tackles for losses, including three sacks, and held John Stark to two yards or fewer 19 times.
