Whirlaway team rolls along

The Whirlaway Racing Team continued its winning ways in the recent New England 5K championships in Lowell, taking home five of the six top team titles and four individual titles in one of its best-ever performances.

“We finally were able to put everyone on the line all in one race,” said Whirlaway coach Dave Kazanjian. “The women were unbelievable, sweeping all three divisions.”

The Whirlaway women won the open, master, and senior divisions. On the open side, Whirlaway won by only 22 seconds to beat Greater Boston to move it into first place overall for the year with one race left. Helen Dinan led the way, finishing fifth overall in 17:41. Amy Bernard of Derry ran a personal-best 18:21.

On the master’s side, Whirlaway women won its sixth straight title this year led by Christin Doneski, who won the overall masters title (40-49) in 18:09. Rounding out the women’s sweep of all three titles, the senior women won their sixth straight of the year led by Maria Servin (18:13), who recently turned 50 and won the overall senior title (50-59) Lisa Zappala of Derry was third.

On the men’s side, the Whirlaway masters team won and were led by overall masters champ Joe Navas in 15:41, while Scott Anderson was fifth and Henry Scollard came in sixth. The men’s senior team, meanwhile, continued to dominate with its sixth straight win for the year. It swept places two through five, led by Paul Hammond (16:31) and followed by Plaistow’s Craig Fram, Mike Cooney, Derry’s Paul Doe and North Andover’s Doug Martyn.

The highlight for the men’s open team, which finished third, was the debut of newcomer Pat Fullerton, the former Haverhill High and Stonehill College standout. He finished fifth overall in 15:15.

“What a day,” said Kazanjian. When you can win five team titles and four individual New England titles, it’s all good. There were so many great performance it’s hard to point anyone out, but seeing Pat (Fullerton) out there running his first Whirlaway race leading the way helped out a lot.”
