Roads skoler
The Florida State football media guide features Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle on its academics page, only it spells his name "Myrone".
Hall of Fame family
North Andover's Titone family was beaming with pride last week as a family member, Jackie MacMullan, became the first female to win the prestigious Basketball Hall of Fame's Curt Gowdy media award. MacMullan, who is as kindhearted as she is talented, gave thanks to her sister and brother-in-law Sue and Vinnie Titone of North Andover. Sue played at Fairfield and Vinnie, of course, was a standout at Methuen and UMass Lowell. Both were on hand at the ceremony in Springfield.
betcha didn't know
Rays ace David Price twice hit nine 3-pointers in a game for Blackman (Tenn.) High. Although, I'm more amazed that the 6-6 fireballer once attempted 23 treys!
Cakes are baking
UTL birthday wishes go out to Vanderbilt baseball player Mike Yastrzemski of Andover (20 tomorrow), Malden Catholic hockey player Tyler Sifferlen of North Andover (15 tomorrow) and Haverhill hoop sensation Noah Vonleh (15 on Tuesday).
Donlon Duo
Wright State's Billy Donlon, 33, is one of the youngest Division 1 head basketball coaches in the country and he has Methuen ties. Oldtimers will recall his maniacal father, Bill. He coached some great Methuen teams from 1978-81, led by Gary McLain, who Donlon brought with him from Long Island, and the aforementioned Vinnie Titone.
Growing boy
Wake Forest is listing Carson Desrosiers as 7-feet, 230 pounds. He was listed as 6-11 last winter. Desrosiers' final national rank for the Class of 2010 ranged from 41 (Scout.com) to 81 (Rivals.com).
