LONGMEADOW — Haverhill native Andy Drohen (The Ranch) and Colin Brennan (Indian Ridge) are tied for first at 1-under 139 after two rounds of stroke play at the 105th Massachusetts Amateur.
The field has been pared from 140 to 32 for today’s first two rounds of match play.
Both competitors bring impressive resumes to match play. Drohen was the 2003 Mass. Am champ, while Brennan has finished as medalist at this event three out of the last four years.
Brennan birdied his final three holes by hitting it to within five feet or less with his approach shots.
Drohen and Brennan were the lone golfers with local ties to make the cut, which was 148.
Some other notables were: Nick Maccario of Bradford (73-76—149), John Gilmartin of Indian Ridge (77-74—151) and Mark Souliotis of Haverhill (83-77—160).
Fairweather fires a 73
STRATHAM — Joe Cooper of Portsmouth and James Pleat of Nashua are tied at 1-under 143 after two rounds of the New Hampshire Amateur.
Nick Fairweather of Windham (75-73-148) remains in the hunt tied for eighth place.
Sixty-four of the 144 golfers made the cut yesterday at the Golf Club of New England including 19-year-old defending champion Joe Leavitt of Atkinson (18th tie, 78-75-153), Joe Soderman of Hoodkroft (18th tie, 79-74-153) and Connor Greenleaf of Windham (19th tie, 77-76-153).
Among those missing the cut were James McKee of Windham (85-81—166), Atkinson’s Jonah Choe (87-80—167), Atkinson’s Pete Desjardins (82-86—168), Windham’s Ryan Butler (85-84—169). Atkinson’s Jeff Weishaar (83-86—169), Atkinson’s Alec Brunelle (90-79—169) and Atkinson’s Peter Beaulieu (88-86—174).
Today’s match play action will cut the field to 32. That will be followed by two rounds of match play on both Thursday and Friday before Saturday’s 36-hole final.
