WARD TO SHARKS CAMP
Haverhill’s Brian Ward, who is playing at St. Lawrence, is headed to the San Jose Sharks development camp in San Jose. Camp begins today.
Salem High graduate and Red Sox minor league right-handed pitcher Terry Doyle was sent from Triple-A Pawtucket to Double-A Portland.
Doyle was 5-6 with a 5.60 ERA in 18 games, 11 starts (80.1 innings) for Pawtucket.
Red Sox minor league left-handed pitcher Drake Britton recently was promoted from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Pawtucket and will start Tuesday at Leigh Valley.
The 24-year-old Britton posted a 7-6 record with a 3.51 ERA in 17 games, 16 starts for Portland and made the Eastern League All-Star team. He recorded 80 strikeouts in 97.1 innings pitched.
During spring training, Britton, who is on Boston’s 40 man-roster, was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and property damage.
I’ve heard some people say the Bruins shouldn’t have even considered signing Jarome Iginla after he picked Pittsburgh over Boston at the trade deadline.
That decision backfired on Iginla as the Penguins got swept by Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals this past season.
Give Iginla break. He chose Pittsburgh because he thought that organization would give him the best chance to win. And how many of you would have passed up on the opportunity to play with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin if you were in his shoes (or skates)?
“I wasn’t sure if it was going to be an opportunity,” Iginla said, according to ESPNBoston.com. “I wasn’t sure how Peter (Chiarelli) felt or how the Bruins felt about possibly having me. I did ask my agent to explore it and I’m thrilled it’s a chance. The city is an amazing sports city. I have friends who played there and they’re a team year in and year out is extremely competitive and very hard to play against.”
Celtics first-round pick Kelly Olynyk made a good first impression in Summer League action.
Boston lost 95-88 to the Magic, but the rookie poured in 25 points, going 9 of 12 from the floor and also added seven rebounds, two steals and two assists. He was 2 for 4 from 3-point range.
Hamilton hoop star and 76ers draft pick Michael Carter-Williams poured in 26 points on 8-of-23 shooting. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had eight assists but the Rockets won 88-80 over the Philadelphia 76ers. He was 0 for 6 from the 3-point line.
Top Red Sox prospect, shortstop Xander Bogaerts, went 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs for the Pawtucket Red Sox yesterday. Bogaerts has four hits in his past seven at-bats and has five homers 23 games for Pawtucket since his promotion from Portland.
Boston Red Sox southpaw reliever Andrew Miller went on the DL with a left foot sprain yesterday and RHP Alfredo Aceves was promoted to Boston from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Having Miller sidelined is a big blow for the Red Sox as he not does he have an impressive strikeout rate of 14.1 batters per nine innings, but he also has held righties to a .155 batting average.
He has better against righties this year, actually. Lefties bat .281 against him.
“Some of the stuff you just account to a small sample size,” Miller said about his significantly better batting average against vs. righties. “I think with lefties this year, I’ve probably given up twice as many infield hits (to them) than I did all of last year. Last year, going into the last series of the year, I think lefties were hitting .100 off of me. That’s probably because balls were hit at people more.”
Last year, lefties batted .149 against him compared to righties batting .263.
