Manchester's winning streak snapped

The Manchester Monarchs had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 5-4 shootout loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins yesterday.

Manchester (28-24-3-4) is third in the Atlantic Division with 63 points. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (32-25-2-1) is third in the East Division with 67 points.

“The outcome is a disappointment because we had a three-goal lead,” Monarchs coach Mark Morris said. “We should have had this one in our grasp. Turnovers aloud a tired team to stay in the game. Injuries are mounting and we were exposed in areas that we are inexperienced.”

Monarchs goalie Martin Jones (18-19-4) stopped 30 of 34 shots and 2 of 4 in the shootout. Penguins goalie Jeff Zatkoff (19-17-0) made 24 saves on 28 shots and stopped all four shootout attempts.

Manchester went 1 for 3 on the power play and added two shorthanded goals for the first time this season.

The Monarchs have recorded points in their past eight games (6-0-1-1). Center Linden Vey tallied three assists. It was his fourth game this season with at least three points.

Manchester hosts the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday at 7 p.m.
