Londonderry drops heartbreaker in semifinals

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Goalie Bobby Krause and the Londonderry defense held Hanover scoreless and to only two shots on goal during the first 77 minutes of yesterday’s Division 1 North semifinal tournament contest.

But that didn’t matter at the 77:14 mark when Hanover’s Jonas Taezner headed a long indirect kick from teammate Evan Greenwald past Krause.

“I just saw the ball float over (off Greenwald’s foot and) a pile of guys in front of me so I didn’t go out after it,” Krause said. “I probably should have. But then I saw (Taezner) elevate over everyone. Just chipped it up and over me.”

The second-seeded Lancers were upset 1-0 by third-seeded Hanover here at Southern New Hampshire University.

Londonderry had an amazing run this season, earning the tourney’s No. 2 seed despite three of its top players not returning from its 2011 squad that went 16-2-1.

“We made it to the semis and that’s not what we wanted but it was a good season,” said Krause, a junior. “I’m personally sorry that I couldn’t take these guys farther because it’s most of their senior years.”

Eleven of the 22 players on the Lancers’ roster are seniors.

“We’re certainly going to be looking to regroup and rebuild,” Londonderry coach Jeff Colbert said. “We had a big, huge senior class of talented kids that really over the last two years have been the heart and soul of this team. And so we’ve got our work cut out for us. Certainly we’ll take a few days and sort of get settled a little bit and then we’ll start thinking about the future down the road. ... Tough loss.”

Londonderry beat Hanover 3-0 during the regular season on Sept. 5.

“It was a battle for 80 minutes,” Colbert said about yesterday’s contest.
