The Eagle-Tribune

---- — Thanks to a strong performance at the recent the New England Marathon Championship at Cape Cod, the Whirlaway Racing Team capped yet another dominating season.

At Cape Cod, which was the final race in the 2012 Grand Prix series, Whirlaway took home five team titles in difficult weather conditions.

The Whirlaway women won the open, masters, and senior divisions. On the open side, Whirlaway’s Helen Dinan was second overall in the race in 2:59. Her finish gave her the overall 2012 New England Grand Prix individual open women’s title. Teammate Christin Doneski was the overall master’s winner

and fourth overall in a time of 3:09 and won six of seven championship races during the year to easily win her second Masters New England title.

Also, Maria Servin ran 3:17, won the seniors title and helped the team with scoring in all three team titles while Nadine Palmer of Derry was the fourth overall master in 3:26 and Derry’s Lisa Zappala was the third overall senior in 3:29.

For the year, the Whirlaway women swept all three Grand Prix titles.

“It was absolutely outstanding,” said Whirlaway coach Dave Kazanjian “The women went beyond what I thought they could do. It’s the first time in our 29 team history we have swept all 3 divisions.”

The Whirlaway men also shined. Brandon Newbould finished second overall in 2:28 to help lead the men’s open team to the team crown. Teammate Scott McGrath of Andover had one of the best performances of the day in the tough windy conditions and ran a personal best by 12 minutes in 2:39 to help with the men’s open title.

On the master’s side, the team finished second at the Cape, but won the overall title for the year for the 13th year in a row. Whirlaway was fourth at one point during the season but it won three of the final four races to claim the crown. Mark Gibson (2:44), Brian Allen (2:48) and Ephraim Ezekiel (2:54) all helped pace the masters team.

The Whirlaway seniors team did not field a team at the Cape, but won all six previous races to win the 2012 Seniors New England title for the fourth year in a row.
