---- — Nancy Corsaro was not too happy with her performance yesterday — 3:27.
With a semi-gimpy foot (slightly torn Achilles), the Methuen wife, mom and ex-road racer made a comeback of sorts in yesterday’s Boston Marathon.
Twenty-four years ago, she was the 12th woman overall at an amazing 2:41:13. She has been on the awards stand seven times over her career, most recently in 2010 when at age 51 she finished third in the 50 to 54 age group.
Yesterday was not even close to one of those days.
If there was going to be a time to feel sorry for herself, it was nullified about 3 p.m. when she was pulling out of the Prudential Parking Garage with her husband, Frank Corsaro, son, Michael Corsaro, father, Dick Munroe and brother, Don.
Nancy saw the ramifications of terrorism soon after hearing two loud bangs about a third of a mile away.
“My dad said, ‘That doesn’t sound like a plane hitting buildings,’” said Corsaro, 52. “My husband said it sounded like a bang you hear from the back of a garbage truck. The next thing we knew, people were running by us with panic in their faces. We knew it was something bad.”
Yesterday was supposed to be a mini-celebration for Corsaro, even with the “slow” time. About a year ago, a doctor told her that her running career was over and that riding a bike would be the preferred recreational activity.
Of course, another doctor said she could run if she could take the pain.
Guess which doctor’s advice she chose?
“I’m not ready to give up running yet,” said Corsaro.
There was a silver lining to yesterday’s “slow” time. In 2011, her last Boston Marathon, she had to quit at 6.5 miles because of a sore foot, which turned out being her Achilles.
She is also lucky, particularly on a day like yesterday, to be surrounded by so much family.
“Frank, Michael, my dad and my brother were all on Boylston Street watching me finish about 40 minutes before the explosions,” said Corsaro. “I’m very lucky.”
