---- — BROOKS COACH STEPS DOWN

Girls basketball coach Amy Kenneally has stepped down at Brooks.

“It was a tough decision but it became very difficult to coordinate my schedule working in the public schools (Andover) with coaching the girls basketball team at Brooks,” she said via e-mail. “Games on Saturdays meant I was missing many of my own sons’ games. They are ages 10, 11, and 13 and as they get older, I don’t want to miss these special times with them.”

She went 39-65 in five years including 10-11 last winter.

BECKWITH HONORED

Northern Essex Community College freshman Zachary Beckwith was named Division III Pitcher of the Week. Beckwith tossed seven shutout innings and struck out six in a 5-0 win over Quinsigamond.

He leads the Knights with a 2.63 ERA and 21 strikeouts.

DOYLE UPDATE

We will run a column on Salem High and Boston College grad Terry Doyle in Sunday’s Eagle-Tribune.

The right-hander is doing a fine job with the PawSox. He went 7.0 innings and allowed just one run on two hits and one walk while striking out six to beat Lehigh Valley Wednesday.

He has hurled 18.1 innings in three starts and allowed just two runs on five hits. He has an impressive ERA of 0.98 ERA while the opposition is batting just .088 against him.

Two interesting notes on Doyle: 1. He and PawSox catcher Dan Butler had the same host family in the Cape League. 2. He’s in his sixth season of minor league ball and has been on the DL only once.

SHEPPARD’S NEW GIG

Former WEEI radio personality Pete Sheppard has a new gig with NBC Sports Radio (1510 AM), hosting the afternoon show.

He tweeted yesterday: “Hey there my friends!! I am happy to announce that I have joined 1510 NBC SPORTS RADIO BOSTON. My show will be 3-6pm Mon-Fri.#refreshing.”

BROWN BACK?

Former Cavaliers and Lakers coach Mike Brown might be headed back to Cleveland, according to ESPN.com. The 2008-09 NBA Coach of the Year was fired by the Lakers after a 1-4 start this year.

Yesterday the Cavs fired Byron Scott.

Brown is 314-167 (.653 winning percentage) in his head coaching career.

ORTIZ BACK TONIGHT

Expect DH David Ortiz back in Boston’s lineup tonight. Jackie Bradley Jr. will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Ortiz homered in a rehab game with the PawSox yesterday.
