Merrimack roundup: Cannata gets the call from Canucks

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — Former Merrimack College goalie Joe Cannata has been promoted to the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL for the final two games of the regular season, the team announced yesterday.

Cannata was a sixth-round draft pick of the Canucks and signed with the team last spring. The Wakefield, Mass., native appeared in 14 games for the Chicago Wolves this season, the Canucks’ AHL affiliate, registering a 2.65 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage and a 6-6-0 record.

Cannata departed as Merrimack’s all-time leader in wins, games played, minutes played, saves, goals-against and save percentage. He started all but one game in his final two years and allowed only 27 even strength goals (excluding empty netters) in 27 league games as a senior.

Merrimack softball blanked Stonehill 8-0 and rallied to tie it up in Game 2 6-6 before it was called due to darkness. Kelli Jo Deardorff scattered seven hits in the win. Tawny Palmieri drove in two runs.

Casey Cotter, Frank Crinella and Eddie Newton each had two hits but Merrimack lost to UMass Lowell 13-2. The Warriors won Game 2 7-4 behind seven innings of one-run ball from winner Alek Morency. Joe Mantoni homered and Dionys Quezada of Lawrence had two hits and two runs for the 21-15 Warriors.

UMass Lowell basketball coach Greg Herenda of North Andover accepted the job at Fairleigh Dickinson in New Jersey. Herenda went 107-70 in six years with the River Hawks.
