A-Rod provides great theatre, leads Yanks to win

Star of the Game: Alex Rodriguez provided great theatre here at Fenway Park. After Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster hit A-Rod with a pitch — it appeared to be intentional — in the second inning, Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with a long solo homer in the sixth. Rodriguez was pumped as he rounded first base and then he high-fived the camera man on the way to the dugout.

Red Sox Star: Will Middlebrooks went 2 for 3 with a homer and double. His batting average has increased 31 points in eight games since his return from Pawtucket.

Dempster Routed: Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster went 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on nine hits and one walk while striking out three. If he did hit A-Rod intentionally, it wasn’t smart. A-Rod was the leadoff batter in the second inning and he scored one of two runs that inning.

Odds and ends: LHP Matt Thornton threw a strong bullpen yesterday. He’ll throw another bullpen tomorrow and could remain in Boston this week to go on a rehab assignment. ... David Ortiz will play first base in at least two games in San Francisco. ... Jacoby Ellsbury was 0 for 4 with a walk and four strikeouts last night.
