Top-ranked Pinkerton tumbles

---- — BEDFORD, N.H. — As outrageously explosive as his offense has been for seemingly forever at Pinkerton Academy, Brian O’Reilly knows an athletic facade when he sees one.

“Running outside like that isn’t offense. That’s running around people,” said O’Reilly. “When you run the football between the tackles, up inside successfully, that’s offense. Real offense. That’s what we do.”

No. 1 Pinkerton could do none of that last night, tumbling to Bedford — in its first-ever Division 1 football game — 14-12, before an overflow crowd of 1,500 in Bulldog country.

The Division 1 state runner-up a year ago, Pinkerton suffered its first opening-day loss since 2009 and was held to its lowest point output since a September loss to Nashua North in the 2010 season.

The Astros’ shortcomings rose almost immediately to the surface, with youth and inexperience in the trenches.

Aside from some dynamic open-field work by Manny Latimore (20-133, 1 TD), Pinkerton couldn’t get out of its own way. Things got worse when leg cramps sent Latimore to the bench.

“You can talk about losing Manny with the cramps, and sure that was a factor, but we weren’t exactly ripping it up with him in there,” said O’Reilly.

The other Astro ball-carriers totalled 11 yards on 16 carries.

A tale of two QBs: For the time being, it appears, O’Reilly will not settle on one QB. Last night, Tilton Prep transfer Jake Froehlich and Jack Hanaway split snaps.

Each had their moments. Hanaway authored a gritty, chain-moving 7-yard run on 3rd-and-6 at a crucial point in the second half. Froehlich hit a couple long passes, one to Kevin Ell and the other to T.J. Urbanik.

Who will get the job?

“We’ll have to see,” said O’Reilly.
