Northern Essex making push for playoffs

---- — HAVERHILL Coming off a 10-0 win against Quinsigamond Thursday, the Northern Essex baseball team continued its playoff push yesterday with a 7-5 win over Bunker Hill.

Christopher Andella racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Knights, with a single and home run. Zach Beckwith allowed three runs over seven innings, striking out seven while surrendering nine hits.

The Knights are 12-12 and will be at Massasoit Tuesday.

Warriors drop pair

NORTH ANDOVER — Merrimack’s softball team dropped a pair of tough ones to St. Anselm, 4-2 and 3-2, dropping to 18-21-1 overall and 9-8-1 in Northeast-10 action. Keaira Monet Perry had two hits in the first game and a two-run single in the second game for the Warriors.

Calzetta shines

LOWELL – Junior pitcher Mike Calzetta of Lawrence yielded just three hits while sophomore Matt Sanchez batted 2 for 5 to lead UMass Lowell over Dominican College, 9-1, last night. The win was UMass Lowell’s sixth in its last seven games as it improved to 26-16 overall entering a key three-game series at home against Southern New Hampshire today and Sunday.

Calzetta struck out six batters over eight innings to improve to 4-1.
