She signed a scholarship with Northeastern after a great career with the Hillies highlighted by school records of 12.34 in the 100 and 25.28 in the 200.
It never clicked for her at NU.
“It was a combination of factors,” she said. “It just wasn’t the right place at the right time, track and personally. My heart just wasn’t in it.”
She transferred to UMass Lowell for a year and a half but chose not to compete.
“I kind of thought I had hung up my spikes for good,” she said. “In high school they recruited me, but it didn’t seem the right fit. I just wasn’t ready.”
She had decided to transfer to Quinnipiac but still wasn’t sold on track.
“I came down to a meet and talked to the coaches. They kind of talked me into it,” said Sam, a senior who is studying to be a physical therapist.
Sam has learned not to put so much pressure on herself.
“It’s more a mindset that I’ll enjoy it more and not be so intense. I’m still intense but I’m able to enjoy it a bit more,” she said.

“I never thought we’d run together again,” said Becca, a nursing major. “It’s great to have her around. I’m always here for her and she’s always here for me. We’re closer than most sisters. I’m literally with her all the time. I though when she came here we’d do our own thing. We’ve gotten closer. We’re still goofy like we were but we’re more trusting and supportive.”
Sam said, “We’re each other’s biggest fans. We don’t feel the need to be better than each other.”
