Lackey leads Sox to win; Pedroia leaves game early

agateHed:RED SOX 6, YANKEES 1

Bad Birthday? Dustin Pedroia was 0 for 5 on his 30th birthday. He did make a couple of nifty defensive plays, including a diving stop to his right in the sixth inning to rob Alex Rodriguez of a hit.

The big news though was that Pedroia fouled a ball off his shin just above his left ankle in the eighth inning. He finished the at-bat but was replaced by Brock Holt defensively in the ninth.

He had a fluoroscan at the ballpark. It came back negative.

“He’s sore,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “We’ll check in the morning but at this point we don’t anticipate missing any time.”

Star of the Game: Red Sox RHP John Lackey earned the win, going 6.2 innings and allowing one run (earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out one. His ERA dropped to 3.22.

Resilient Red Sox: Boston entered yesterday on a third-game losing streak but remained the only team in baseball this season to be without at least four straight games.

Offensive Star: Jacoby Ellsbury went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. ... Shane Victorino, David Ortiz, Mike Carp, Daniel Nava and Will Middlebrooks all had two hits each. One of Ortiz’s hits was homer to center field.

Napoli Scratched: Mike Napoli was scratched from the original lineup with a foot ailment. “It’s in the plantar fasciitis area of the left foot,” Farrell said. “This has been something that’s been a maintenance issue with him for a little bit of time here.”

Buchholz Update: Clay Buchholz will throw a simulated game to Red Sox hitters on Wednesday in San Francisco.
