Red Sox finish sweep over White Sox

Red Sox 7, White Sox 6

Star of Game: Closer Koji Uehara finished off the White Sox with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. It was his 16th save. He has not allowed a base runner in 14 of his 16 converted saves.

AL East Standings: With their win and Tampa’s 5-1 loss to Oakland, the Red Sox are 5.5 games ahead of the Rays for first place in the AL East. Boston has an 8.5 game lead on Baltimore, which yesterday beat New York, which is 9.0 back. Toronto sits in last at 19.5 games out.

Second Star: David Ortiz had two hits yesterday and has reached base in eight of his past 11 plate appearances, going 5 for 8 with three walks and six RBIs. It comes after a 0-for-23 stretch. Ortiz is two hits shy of 2,000.

Surging Red Sox: Boston has won seven of its past eight games and 10 of its past 14. At 82-56, the Red Sox are a season-high 26 games over .500.

Steaks Ends: Red Sox hurlers surrendered six runs, snapping their streak of three runs or fewer allowed in each of the club’s past 11 games. That had matched Boston’s longest stretch of three runs or fewer since an 11-game stretch in 1988.

Injury Report: Shane Victorino is listed day-to-day after leaving in the seventh inning with a hip contusion. ... Jacoby Ellsbury left for a defensive replacement in the ninth with a swollen left thumb but he plans to play today.
