---- — At Friday night’s football season opener, Lawrence High and Central Catholic will be raising money for “The Littlest Lancer,” 3-year-old Daymien Rios, who has an inoperable brain tumor. Admission will be free for students but a donation to help the Rios family is recommended. Others can donate at the game as well.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Longhorns go 0 for 4

CBSsports.com’s Bruce Feldman wrote that Texas didn’t pursue Texas natives Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel, who all have become legendary quarterbacks. Add to that list, Florida State freshman Jameis Winston, who looks like he’ll be The Next Big Thing. Feldman says Winston reached out to the Longhorns but they didn’t reciprocate.

If UT coach Mack Brown is fired after this season, the QB blunders will be the reason why.

Coach minzner

Lawrence native Ellen Minzner coached an American paralympic crew squad to a fourth-place finish at the recent Rowing World Championships in South Korea. Minzner was the former executive director of Greater Lawrence Community Boating.

Minzner is the Director of Outreach at Community Rowing, where she oversees program development for veterans, the disabled, and inner-city youth in the Boston area.

Somerville arrests

Three Somerville High JV boys soccer players were arrested Friday on rape charges at Camp Lenox in Otis, Mass.

How, in the year 2013, any school allows its students to attend these camps is beyond me. Time and time again we’ve heard the horror stories. But the sickeningly naive coaches, ADs, principals and superintendents just stick their heads in the sand.

Ryan promoted

Sean Ryan, the 1991 Eagle-Tribune MVP at Andover High, was promoted to associate head coach at Division 1 Central Connecticut, where he is entering his fourth season. Ryan previously coached at Holy Cross, College of Charleston, BU and St. Anselm.

tweet, tweet

I used to work with a guy with a poor work ethic. Thank goodness it was pre-Twitter. During a recent 24-hour span, he tweeted and retweeted 280 times.

huge brothers

Sim Bhullar is a 7-5, 360-pound sophomore basketball player at New Mexico State. This year he’ll be joined by his 7-3, 300-pound freshman brother Tanveer.

A boy named Sue

Bet nobody criticizes LSU’s promising young defensive end for his less than macho name. He’s Danielle Hunter.
