Major League update

Cincinnati Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan of Andover: .209, 2 HRs, 16 runs, 21 RBIs.

L.A. Dodgers relief pitcher Brian Wilson of Londonderry: 1-1, 1.50 ERA, 0 saves, 6 innings, 2 walks, 6 Ks.

Kansas City Royals first baseman Carlos Pena of Haverhill: 0 for 3; overall including Houston: .207, 8 HRs, 38 runs, 25 RBI.

Chelmsford hazing

Hazing seems to happen with frightening regularity. Chelmsford football is now being investigated for hazing at a camp in Moultonboro, N.H.

I’m simply amazed, that in this day and age with the scores of frightening hazing stories out there, that coaches, ADs, principals and superintendents have their athletes attend these camps and put the most vulnerable in harm’s way.

Fabulous freshman

Catholic University freshman libero Michelle Bouchard of Andover and Central Catholic was named to the all-tourney team at the Guetle Volleyball Invitational.

Block party

Michael Kwegyir-Attah was the Haverhill player who blocked the potential game-winning 45-yard field goal by Beverly Saturday.

Bentley beat

Ex-Pinkerton star Emmitt Smith has moved to defensive back. The sophomore is starting at Bentley and head three tackles and a pass break-up. His teammate is All-Name Teamer Jet Kollie from Lowell.

Girls soccer wins

I crunched some numbers and put together the area girls soccer wins leader list. Interestingly, all three are retired.

Bud McCarthy of North Andover 358-10-58, Bob Morahan of Brooks 317-112-60, Dick Loschi of Andover 298-83-49. Loschi had about 312 wins including his stint at Triton (2009-12).

paying his dues

Ryan Griffin, the 6-6, 254-pound rookie out of Londonderry, was active for the Texans’ opener Monday night but didn’t record any statistics.

7 tD passes

A funny tidbit came out when Peyton Manning had his 7 TD-pass game. The last to do it was Joe Kapp in 1969. One of the refs that day was Adrian Burk, who also once threw 7 TDs in a game and made the call on Franco Harris’ “Immaculate Reception” for the Steelers in 1972.

Bledsoe’s new job

Ex-Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe is now the offensive coordinator at Summit High in Bend, Ore. He has a couple boys who will be coming up through the system.

Coaching tree

St. Anselm can be proud of its ties to the NBA. New 76ers head coach Brett Brown assisted his father at St. A’s in the mid-’80s and Steve Clifford, the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, was an assistant from 1985-89.
