Patriots win in soggy, error-laden effort

FOXBORO — Do you want a silver lining to a long, wet, uninspired evening of football that the entire country was forced to watch?

The New England Patriots won, 13-10 ... and the New York Jets lost.

Other than, and the fact that the Patriots probably have clinched the AFC East title at 2-0, the Patriots have a lot of work to do.

The funny thing is until the final minute when things got ugly after a Patriots interception, this didn’t feel like a typical Pats-Jets hate-fest we’ve become accustomed to the last decade and a half. The Jets don’t have anybody worth despising anymore. Even their slimmed down, muffled coach Rex Ryan has turned into a sympathetic figure.

All you need to know about the Patriots, which will no doubt be a whipping boy for pro football pundits this morning, was Tom Brady. He was not good.

Sure, he didn’t have much help, missing his top two receivers — tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Danny Amendola — and the rain was pretty heavy in the second half, but Brady was way off for the second week in a row. He finished completing only 19 of 39 passes for 185 yards, throwing behind receivers and throwing some questionable balls on third down.

The Patriots top performer was receiver Julian Edelman, who finished with 13 catches for 78 yards, taking over the “Wes Welker” role we’ve come to expect every game.

The Patriots will now be off 10 days before hosting another underwhelming team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.
