Under the Lights: Gould, Gilmartin get Hall call

Hall of Famers

Several athletes with local ties are being inducted into the St. John’s Prep Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

Patrick Gould (SJP ‘89), who now lives in Haverhill, was an All-Scholastic golfer and led the Eagles to their third straight state title.

The Peabody native, who played at Bryant, made it as in individual, and the powerhouse late ‘80s golf teams are being inducted, too. They included Mike Bardwell of Methuen, Pat Breen of Andover and John Gilmartin of Andover.

man from mars Hill

Mars Hill (N.C.) College freshman Nick Caruso of Lawrence shot a 73-76—149 to win the four-team Montreat College Men’s Fall Invitational. He coolly drained a par saving putt on the 35th hole to secure the win.

Hofmann working again

Former Merrimack AD Glenn Hofmann, who resigned in late August after being investigated by a law firm hired by the school, wasn’t out of work for long. He’s executive associate athletic director at Virginia Commonwealth. His boss is first-year AD Ed McLaughlin, who worked at Merrimack from 1997-00. The two had worked together at Niagara.

Cakes are baking

Happy 17th birthday today to Pinkerton football star Manny Latimore. ... Coast Guard basketball player Eli Sponseller is from an unlikely town. North Pole, Alaska.

Millennium club

Andover girls volleyball coach George Sullivan said he’s “leaning toward” retiring after compiling a 418-157 record in 26 years. I wonder if any coach in area history can match his win totals: He also went 285-144 in 21 years as Andover’s boys volleyball coach and had 11 wins at Merrimack College in 1990. That’s 714 volleyball wins.

Also, he went 107-63 in eight years as Andover’s girls basketball coach (1987-88 to 94-95). That gives him 821 wins. Counting his years as middle school boys basketball coach and football coach at Andover’s West Junior High and a few years as JV football and JV boys basketball coach, he may have over 1,000 wins in his 43 years of coaching.

same old laSpada

Billerica’s Nick LaSpada, who is arguably the greatest QB in MVC history, played wide receiver as a postgrad at Taft. He caught the winning TD pass in a 41-36 win over Kent then sealed the win with a late interception. He hopes to attend Yale.

First kiss

Kansas State’s record-setting quarterback Collin Klein’s marriage story is a bizarre one. Klein, 23, said he was told by the Lord to marry K-State women’s basketball player Shalin Spani, daughter of ex-KSU and NFL linebacker Gary Spani. According to Klein, Shalin heard a voice in her head to marry him. As the story goes, they got married before even sharing a kiss. That’s something as a 14-year-old Klein promised himself he’d do.

Move your feet

West Virginia’s Kevin Noreen somehow managed to foul out in eight minutes vs. Gonzaga.

No nepotism

It’s amusing what isn’t included in college biogs. For Bryant hoopster Joe O’Shea, it mentions his father was the longtime St. Michael’s coach Tom O’Shea. It neglects to point out his uncle is Bryant coach Tim O’Shea!
