Pedroia wins 2013 'Heart and Hustle Award'

NEW YORK -- The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) is pleased to announce Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia as the overall winner of the 2013 Heart and Hustle Award. This esteemed award honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit, and tradition of the game.

The Heart and Hustle Award is also the only award in Major League Baseball that is voted on by former players.

Pedroia has won the Heart and Hustle Award for the Red Sox three times previously, and is active in the Red Sox Foundation. He also works with the Jimmy Fund in partnership with the Red Sox to save lives, find cures and dramatically change the quality of lives for patients and their families.

The announcement was made on November 19, 2013 at the 14th Annual Legends for Youth Dinner in New York City. The event also honored Lifetime Achievement Award winners Ozzie Smith and Bobby Richardson, as well as Brooks Robinson Community Service Award winner Tim Wakefield. This event is the primary fundraiser for the series of free Legends for Youth Baseball Clinics. These clinics impact more than 15,000 children each year, allowing them the unique opportunity to interact with and learn from players who have left a lasting impact on the game of baseball.
