Sports in a Minute: Coffey comes up big for Governor's

coffey break

Zach Coffey, a 6-4 sophomore from West Newbury, had a fine season for Governor’s Academy, which won the New England Prep Fleming Bowl. Coffey, a transfer from Central Catholic, caught 15 passes and scored three TDs this fall. He’s also a highly-regarded prospect in hockey and lacrosse.

His father, Tom Coffey, was a two-time Super Bowl champion as a standout linebacker at Andover High.

Centr-Al Peterson

In Sunday’s paper, “Super Fan” Al Peterson listed his top memories from 71 years of following Central Catholic sports. It’s safe to say he’d have another memory near the top of the list after the Raider football stunner over mighty Everett.

Unsung Heroes

Salem soccer coach Tony Karibian said he was fortunate to have four senior unsung heroes this fall. He wrote, “Kevin Strout, Connor Sheehy, Max Wildfeuer and Bryant Borges dedicated their fall seasons to the program throughout their careers. They worked hard for the freshman and JV teams and made varsity this year. They are model teammates. While they may not have put up many numbers in the stats sheet, their efforts in training and support in games is an important part of why we were successful.”

Ivy League dummies

I always thought my older brother Bob Muldoon, the Columbia grad, was the smartest guy around. Now, I’m wondering about a Columbia education. Last Friday the Columbia hoop team had a chance to shock Michigan State, but the Spartan crowd twice late in the game fooled the Lions with the fake shot clock countdown chant.

Ward honored

Framingham State senior forward Eric Ward of Haverhill was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week. He had two goals and two assists in three wins. His goal with seven seconds left in regulation beat UMass Dartmouth.

Quick kicks

Kickers and punters are usually mocked but some are legitimate athletes. One of the hits of the season was by Colts punter Pat McAfee on Denver’s All-Pro return man Trindon Holliday. Buffalo punter Brian Moorman was a 10-time All-American trackster with personal bests of 13.81 for the 110 hurdles and 49.77 for the 400 hurdles.
